Book Cover Designs

About two weeks ago we were given an assignment to create a book cover series. I jumped right into the project and created 5 awesome book covers that I love.

We were looking into Book Series to do a Book Cover Redesign and I found an Author Series with some of my favorite movies. Roald Dahl was the writer of the following books: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The Big Friendly Giant, Charlie and the Glass Elevator and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the first cover I made. I immediately knew I wanted to do a combination of browns to create the cover. The class we were doing the book cover series for was Advanced Typography, so I knew I wanted to stick with all type. The first thing that came to mind was repeating the title over and over again in the background. I wanted to do it brown like the background but a bit lighter so you could read it. I didn't want it light enough that it would take away from the title. I tried making the title white but it was too much for the look I was going for.

James and the Giant Peach was the second cover I made. I wanted all the covers to look the same so I stuck with the same style but changed the color scheme and words. I wanted the title to be repeated but I didn't want any of the letters to be cut off the page. I wanted them all readable and didn't want any of the words to be cut in half. I changed the sizes of the type to add contrast and a little fun. So you focus on some words and not others.

Next, was The Big Friendly Giant. I continued with my theme of color. I made a silhouette of one of the things that stood out to me in the books. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I chose the Factory, James and the Giant Peach, I chose the Peach. I wanted it light enough to be visible but not too light that it would take away from the white text in the paragraph.

Charlie and the Glass Elevator was really exciting for me. I love the color purple and the combination of purple's that I used. I also had no idea what a Glass Elevator looks like, but I felt like it was somewhat like my grandfather's tool shed only glass. So I tried to create something like that but with a awkward yet silly form; larger at the top, smaller at the bottom.

The last cover I created was The Fantastic Mr. Fox. I created my titles by making them all line up on both the right and left sides. The size was based on how big I had to create it to make it even with the other words and stretch across. One of the last things I added was the barcode and the Penguin Classic Logo. I didn't know all these books were made by the same Author and Publisher so that was really neat to learn.

The assignment was to create a Book Cover Series, not an Author Series, so I ended up creating a different set of Book Covers. But, I am really proud of this set of book covers and the way they turned out so I had to share!
